Laser Periodontal Therapy (LPT)

Periodontal (gum) disease is a usually painless but destructive condition of chronic oral bacteria and inflammation. Early signs are red, swollen gums that bleed easily. The dangers of periodontal disease are becoming more and more known as medical research is showing a dramatic link between these bacteria and heart disease, diabetes, and other serious medical conditions.

What is Laser Periodontal Therapy?

Until now, traditional periodontal surgery meant amputating diseased gum tissue, often exposing sensitive tooth roots. While that may work, laser (LPT) treatment is an advanced technique that enables Dr. Regiani to treat periodontal disease more gently and save many teeth that were previously considered hopeless. A laser light is used to gently remove the harmful bacteria and diseased tissue from gum pocket. This allows the body to heal naturally so that the gum pockets improve and the teeth become more stable. The laser is a wonderful tool to help achieve a more healthy condition. Dr Regiani is proud to be one of a handful of dentists in Michigan to be trained and certified to offer this new method of treating periodontal disease.

Dramatic Patient Benefits

LPT is dramatically less traumatic – yet a highly effective alternative – to conventional cut-and-sew gum therapy:

  • No cutting of the gum tissues with a scalpel and no stitches means easy recovery with minimal bleeding.
  • Preserves gum tissue instead of cutting it away.
  • Reduces root exposure and sensitivity.
  • Reduces infection.
  • Reasonable expense.

Who is a Candidate for this Therapy?

People who have gum pockets of 4 mm or greater or gum disease with a loss of bone that supports the teeth are good candidates for LPT.  If you have red swollen gums, but gum pockets less than 4 mm, you most likely have superficial gingivitis and may not be a candidate for LPT.  Still, we'll work with your needs appropriately in an attempt to prevent your condition from progressing.

Common Questions...

Does it hurt?

NO.  The procedure itself can be virtually painless. We will anesthetize the area for your comfort much as we would if we were doing a dental filling.  Typically, most people have no post-procedure discomfort.

How long does it take?

Depending on the severity of your periodontal disease, treatment may be accomplished in one office visit or in multiple visits. The estimated treatment time is reviewed when we discuss your treatment plan.

Does this treatment cost more than traditional gum surgery?

NO.  When you consider the high cost of tooth and bone loss, laser treatment is a much less expensive option. Typically, we use the same billing codes as traditional gum surgery and the laser treatment is generally no more expensive than traditional surgery. There are other factors in which may affect the cost, such as severity of the periodontal disease, and how many teeth are involved. You can discuss your payment options with our dental office personnel as we offer financing for this treatment.
